After more than ten hours of cutting through endless waves of enemies, we’re finally ready to share our full impressions of GODBREAKERS - an action roguelike where sharp reflexes, teamwork, and the occasional missed dodge determine your fate.

If you prefer a written version, you’ll find it below - including some exclusive gameplay tips that didn’t make it into the video. Whether you’re just getting started or diving into higher Tangles, these will help you survive your first runs and polish your co-op experience.

About This Review

We spent 10 hours cutting through waves of enemies in GODBREAKERS - not just to share our impressions as a duo, but also to confirm that Nox still isn't pulling his weight in roguelikes . But if you want to know what kept us hooked through hours of questionable teamwork, and where the game still needs a bit of polish, keep reading.

Quick Gameplay Tips
  • Focus on Dodging and avoiding damage early on. At the start, you don't have any reliable means of healing yet - staying mobile is key to survival.
  • Upgrade wisely: When improving your echoes, prioritize healing and energy regeneration upgrades. These make combat far more forgiving and sustain you through longer runs. Also, don't miss out on the Healing Coils from the Merchant stock.
  • Learn enemy patterns: Victory depends on memorizing attack patterns and knowing which enemies grant useful Godbreak abilities.
  • Try all Archetypes: There are six archetypes (classes), all offensive, but some lean toward team play with abilities like shields. Each has unique health, range, and attack power - experiment to find your ideal fit.
  • Share gear in co-op: Optimize your builds by trading items mid-run. Click on an item in your equipment and select "share," or drop it on the ground so others can pick it up.
  • No auto-targeting: Manual aiming takes practice, so expect to miss a few hits early on. If it's too tough, connect a controller - it features target-locking unavailable to mouse and keyboard players.
  • Cap your FPS if needed: The game can tax your GPU (90–100% usage on RTX 4070–5070). For smoother performance, consider locking the framerate at 60 FPS.

About The Game

GODBREAKERS is the debut title from Swedish indie studio To The Sky , a team of industry veterans with backgrounds in franchises like Need for Speed . That sense of speed definitely carries over - the game is fast-paced, reflex-heavy, and constantly pushing you to stay alert.

The Boss Fights Are Pure Chaos!

For roguelike veterans, it feels both familiar and fresh. For newcomers, the hack-and-slash combat and progression are easy to pick up. You play as vessels crafted by celestials to take down Monad, a rogue AI that ended humanity. The story unfolds through commentary and hidden lore fragments found throughout the world.

GODBREAKERS can be played solo or with up to three friends in online co-op - though there's no local split-screen option . It launches on October 23rd for PC and PlayStation, and it's Steam Deck verified . However, crossplay between PC and console won't be available at release.

Gameplay and Archetypes

After a short tutorial, you arrive at the hub - your main area for customization, testing combos, and choosing between six Archetypes. Each offers a unique playstyle, with no traditional support roles but plenty of team-oriented skills such as barriers and slows.

Each run lasts between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on your skill and luck, making it ideal for shorter co-op sessions. Along the way, items, weapons, and active skills drop randomly, creating endless opportunities for experimentation and synergy.

The standout mechanic is the Godbreak ability: you can absorb an enemy's power during a brief time window. It only has one charge before recharging, but mastering this timing is key to maximizing your damage and versatility.

Combat feels fast and satisfying, with both basic and advanced combo options. Since there's no auto-targeting or crosshair, you'll need to manually aim attacks - though dodging, positioning, and combo timing quickly become second nature.

Boss Fights and Progression

Each of the six biomes contains linear chambers with random elements leading to a mini-boss and, finally, a big boss. Before the final boss, a merchant lets you upgrade or trade abilities using in-game currency dropped during your run.

Bosses are well-designed and distinct, but many rely heavily on add spawns , which can make fights more chaotic than strategic. These adds are essential for generating Godbreak energy, but they can also overwhelm your team if left unchecked.

Once you clear your first full cycle, you unlock Tangles - difficulty modifiers similar to Mythic+ affixes in World of Warcraft . You can activate up to five at once, greatly increasing the challenge (and your suffering). Combined with permanent upgrades like better healing and energy regeneration, GODBREAKERS offers plenty of replay value.

Co-op Experience

Co-op is where GODBREAKERS truly shines. The netcode is smooth, scaling feels balanced, and synchronization between players is flawless. However, there's currently no matchmaking or in-game chat, so you'll need to team up with friends and use external communication tools.

Item sharing works seamlessly - simply select "share" in your inventory to drop an item on the ground and let others pick it up. Builds can complement each other beautifully when players coordinate, creating a sense of genuine teamwork, especially during boss fights and resurrection attempts.

Performance and Polish

Overall, GODBREAKERS runs well, but we noticed high GPU usage on both RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 5070 cards, often hitting 90–100%. If you experience high GPU load, we recommend locking the framerate to 60 FPS for better stability.

Visually, the six biomes are stunning and distinct, though they can start to feel repetitive over time. The game is technically polished - we encountered no bugs, and the UI, sound design, and effects all feel clean and satisfying. Future updates may bring more biomes, bosses, and weapons, which would elevate replayability even further.

Final Thoughts

GODBREAKERS is a fast, satisfying action roguelike that thrives in co-op. It's perfect for players who value fun combat and teamwork over deep storytelling, and who enjoy shorter, high-intensity runs under an hour.

If you crave huge variety between runs or need matchmaking to play with strangers, it might feel limited at first. Still, with its fun mechanics, fluid combat, and well-tuned co-op experience, GODBREAKERS delivers an enjoyable mix of challenge and chaos. We hope that the variety of biomes and events will be expanded in the future, as the game is rather short otherwise, especially if you don't play hardmodes or want to unlock cosmetic items.

See you in the biomes, and happy Godbreaking!
