How To Beat Ghorm

Hello Explorers, Miners, and Farmers!
In this short guide, we will show you one of the possible hundreds of strategies to kill Ghorm the Devourer. This strategy worked well for us in 2-player co-op, but you can do it just as easily even in singleplayer.

About Ghorm and how to find him

Ghorm is one of the first three big bosses in Core Keeper. You can find him roaming around the dirt biome in a ring shape, leaving behind a trail of slime and destruction wherever he comes through. Beyond, you will find one of the next biomes (The Clay Caves or Forgotten Ruins).

After beating Glurch the Abominous Mass, which we would recommend you choose to do first, and looted an item called “Glurch Eye”, bring it to its statue near your Core. You will then unlock the recipe to craft an item called “Ghorm the Devourer Scanner” at the statue, which requires 3 Ancient Gemstones and 3 Mechanical Parts.
After using this item, you are able to track Ghorm's position on your world map to prepare for the fight and also to not be surprised by him passing through.

Beating him does not only advance your main story quest around the Core but also makes it possible for you to lay out a railway system beyond the dirt biome. As long as Ghorm is still alive, he will destroy anything laid out in his path.

Ghorm will continue to run his laps until you get his attention.

Materials to prepare

There are multiple possible strategies to take on Ghorm, and the community has gotten quite creative with this. We found using dynamite packs to be not only one of the safest but also most satisfying strategies if prepared correctly.

For this, you need to prepare at least 21 dynamite packs. We used around 30 in our kill (but this seemed to be a bit overkill. We double-checked Ghorm's Max Health on the Core Keeper Wiki and calculated that 21 should be sufficient).
To get startet, follow allow the steps below. If you prefer visuals over a list, we also prepared a visual guide for you below.

  • Mine Tin Ores. You need at least 21 pieces.
    • If you have trouble finding tin, explore a bit further out in any direction until you come across Clay Caves.
    • Tin ore is also dropped by caveling shamans (the ones carrying a flaming staff) and found in wooden crates.
  • Process Your Tin Ore into Tin Bars in a Furnace.
  • Collect 42 orange-colored slimes, which are dropped by (you guessed it) Slime monsters.
  • Plant Bomb Pepper Seeds until you harvested 42 Bomb Peppers.
    • If you have never done farming in Core Keeper before: you need to craft a Hoe tool and use it on dirt ground, then put plant seeds on your hotbar and place them on your prepared soil.
    • Take a watering can to a body of water, equip it, and right-click on the water to fill it up. Then return to your field and water each planted seed.
    • Fruit take about 10 minutes to grow from seedling to ripe.
Look after your farms between getting the other items. Seeds take about 10 minutes to grow.

  • Build an Electronics Table at a copper workbench or higher (8 Wood, 8 Copper Bar).
  • At the Electronics Table, craft at least 21 Dynamite Packs, as well as one lever (3 Wood, 2 Copper Bars) and 21 electrical wires (7 Copper Bars).

Finally, pick a position next to Ghorm’s route that is relatively straight and can be cleared for setting down the dynamite packs. Lay down two rows of dynamite packs on the side of his track (not on it, as they will get destroyed!). Connect the inward row with the wire, until you are around 4 to 5 cells away from the lower row. Attach the Lever to the wire.

And now, it’s time to wait for Ghorm’s arrival. If you are playing in co-op, one of you can scout for the exact moment of him passing the first dynamite packs, or if you are playing in singleplayer, look for the moment when the blue lights that illuminate the horn on his head show up at the border of the screen. Now DETONATE! And celebrate your victory and loot chest.
